Even earns top graduation medal at Badin High

Joshua J. “J.J.” Even was awarded the Stephen T. Badin medal, the highest honor given to a Badin High School student, at the graduation ceremony on Friday, May 26, at St. John the Evangelist Church in West Chester Township.

The medal is given to the senior who is voted by the faculty and staff as the most outstanding member of the graduating class in all aspects of his or her high school career.

Even, a graduate of Sacred Heart School, was the president of Student Council, tied for No. 1 in the class, a National Merit Commended Student, and a standout boys soccer and boys volleyball player for the Rams. The son of Rob and Christina Even of Fairfield, J.J. will attend Indiana University in Bloomington and major in Neuroscience.

“That medal was well earned by J.J.,” said Badin Principal Patrick Keating ’07. “He had an outstanding high school experience and led the class throughout their years here. I can’t wait to hear about all of J.J.’s success in the world beyond Badin High School.”

A total of 135 students were represented in Badin’s Class of 2023, the co-ed Catholic high school’s 57th graduating class since opening in the fall of 1966.

Four students earned the Archbishop McNicholas medal as the top students in the class. They were each the co-valedictorians. Joining J.J. Even in earning the McNicholas medal were:

  • Emma Brecht is the daughter of Laurie Brecht of Fairfield and a graduate of Sacred Heart School. She will attend the University of Alabama and major in Pre-Med.
  • Mary Giffen is the daughter of Michael and Marie Giffen of Liberty Township and a graduate of Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School. A National Merit Scholarship finalist, she will attend Saint Louis University and major in Biology.
  • Jimmy Zettler is the son of Jim and Edwina Zettler of Fairfield and a graduate of Sacred Heart School. A National Merit Scholarship finalist, he will attend the University of Alabama and major in Mechanical Engineering.

Maura Mathews earned the Archbishop Leibold medal for outstanding contributions to the school and the community. Maura is the daughter of Jeff and Andrea Mathews of Fairfield and a graduate of Sacred Heart School. She will attend Ohio University and major in Communications.

Grace Warner earned the Archbishop Alter medal for outstanding contributions to faith life at the school. Grace is the daughter of Douglas and Karen Warner of Hamilton and a graduate of St. Peter in Chains School. She will attend the University of St. Francis (Ind.) and major in Elementary Education.

Badin graduates will attend 41 different colleges and universities in 11 states. Miami University (25 students) and the University of Cincinnati (20 students) lead the way, with eight students each headed to the University of Dayton and Ohio University. The Class of 2023 earned $22.8 million in academic scholarship offers for college.

Three members of the graduating class will become members of the United States Armed Services: Jaiden Polly has joined the U.S. Army, while two members earned full ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarships from the Air Force – Ty Berkely (Embry Riddle Aeronautical University) and Ethan Gibson (Miami University).

Badin’s Baccalaureate ceremony, celebrated by Badin chaplain Father Ed Pratt, took place at St. Julie Billiart Church in Hamilton on Wednesday, May 24. The graduation keynote speaker, a faculty member as voted on by the senior class, was Mr. Eric Cole, who teaches Psychology and French at Badin.
