Badin High students earn major academic awards

Badin High School presented major academic awards in a socially distanced program held in St. Basil’s Chapel at the school on Tuesday, May 19.

“These students made a difference in so many areas and we were proud to recognize them, as we do each year,” BHS Principal Brian Pendergest said. “Most of them were able to be at Badin in-person and we held the program in a safe and appropriate manner. We were glad to do that and honor them as they deserved.”

The valedictorians of Badin’s Class of 2020 are Will Giffen, who will attend Washington University of St. Louis; Adam Salek (University of Notre Dame), Sophie Tischler (Louisiana State University) and Nathan Hogan (University of Leeds).

Five seniors were recognized as being National Merit Scholarship “Commended Students,” having placed in the top five percent of students in the country in the scholarship test – Jack Feenstra, Will Giffen, Nathan Hogan, Megan Siefert and Max Smith

Senior department award winners included:
Art – Regan Runtz
English – Caitlin Savage
Foreign Language – Andrea Clark
Marketing – Nathan Schuster
Math – Will Giffen
Religion – Colin Crank
Science – Sophie Tischler
Social Studies – David Strunk

Major annual book awards earmarked for juniors went to the following:
The University of Notre Dame book award – Caroline Kammerer
The Brown University book award – Tatum Oliver
The Bausch & Lomb science award – Eli Pappas

Other significant awards included:
The Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholar/Athlete award – Seniors Will Giffen and Sophie Tischler
The OHSAA Archie Griffin award – Senior Ella Pohlen and junior Avery Brossart
The OHSAA Courageous Student award – Junior Emma Trusock
The National Federation of High Schools Sportsmanship award – Seniors Zoe Hargis and Emari Smiley
Zoe Hargis will be joining the United States Air Force this summer.

Academic letters and pins were also announced at Tuesday’s event. The entire program was videotaped and is on the Facebook page of Stephen T. Badin High School.
