HCF scholarships and red cords among highlights for Badin seniors

May is Awards Month at Badin High School, and though the virus pandemic may have put a damper on in-person activities, it didn’t keep BHS seniors from garnering a lot of success.

Sixty-two students were awarded college scholarships from the Hamilton Community Foundation.

“Receiving a scholarship from the Hamilton Community Foundation is quite a feather in a student’s cap,” Badin Principal Brian Pendergest said. “The application process is significant and the competition is quite talented across the area. This is a big number for our students and I know they will take advantage of these opportunities.”

In addition, 27 seniors earned the right to wear red cords with their cap-and-gown at graduation. The red cord signifies a student who donated blood at least twice during their high school career. One blood donation has the potential to save at least three lives.

“Donating blood is something that our students are proud to do and take very seriously,” said Mrs. Kay Collins, chair of the Science Department and coordinator of the annual blood donation effort. “We were locked down during the date of this year’s event, but I know our students put a premium on donating. When you’re in high school and you take the opportunity to potentially save lives, that says something.”
