Service Learning
Description of Course
Service Learning is a course in which a Badin High School junior or senior earns ½ general credit for 24 hours of volunteer work donated to our community. This credit is an elective and will be graded on the standard Badin High School grading scale. A student may obtain a maximum of 1 full credit on their final transcript in Service Learning.
Service Learning combines classroom study of volunteerism, service, and philanthropy with field experience serving in our local community. The student will spend 2 hours per week per semester in the field ( ½ hour every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.) A student will choose their placement with the help of the classroom teacher. The agencies will have a designated contact person to whom the student will report. Student groups may be asked to work together to design / lead special community service projects as well. The student will be in class during the first 2 and last 2 weeks of the semester. During this time, students will be trained and prepared for the upcoming service experiences. Students will be in class every Friday as well to turn in weekly journals and assignments as well as to discuss experiences with classmates. The time equivalent to just over 1 day of your life (30 hours) will be given to making a difference in our community. Good for you for choosing to make this difference. Thanks.
The student and teacher will agree on a suitable volunteer site for each quarter or for the entire semester (to be determined individually for each student / placement agency). Students will ‘sign out’ in the Office of Religious Education and ‘sign in’ with their agency contact each day they leave campus to volunteer. Transportation will be provided by students with parent permission and insurance verification. There is a “ONE & DONE” policy. The first time a student does not report to their agency as required without an approved excuse, the student will be automatically dropped from the course.
You will be representing Badin High School to our local community. You must conduct yourself in a mature, respectful manner. You will be asked to dress in full uniform unless there is a specific reason that you need to dress more casually (working with children, playing on the floor, etc.). You may also wear your “Service Learning” t-shirt. If you have a reason that you’ll miss your volunteer session due to an excused absence from school (retreat, college day, game, etc.) you must inform your contact as well as your teacher with as much advance notice as possible.
Students taking the Service Learning Course will be asked to sign a commitment letter, a permission slip (to be signed by parent or guardian even if student is 18), and an information form. These will be kept on file to be used throughout the semester. If there are any changes during this time, the student is expected to inform the teacher (address, phone change, etc.).
Your time, energy, and effort can truly make a difference for those in need in our community! Thank you for taking part in this volunteer experience!
YOU make the difference at Badin High School and IN OUR COMMUNITY!
What is BHS Service Learning? “I’ve worked with 2 very different groups of people. (As a junior) I worked with younger kids and it was very rewarding to see my help appreciated. I knew I made a difference. This year (senior year), working at the Liberty Center (adults with disabilities), I’ve gotten a change to work in an environment that most people don’t. I get to truly influence
the life of an individual.”

“I’ve helped 4th graders become better readers.
I’ve also become a more patient person as well.
I enjoy the smiles and laughs the most.”

“My Service Learning experience has been nothing less than awesome!
I’ve gone to Sunrise Senior Living Center this year (senior year),
to visit the elderly. There isn’t a day that we’re there that
the residents aren’t ecstatic. It’s a great feeling
knowing that you’re making a difference to someone!
Last year (as a junior) I tutored students at Fillmore.
I really connected with those kids.”

“My experience has been wonderful. I have gone to KEYS both semesters my senior year and I have really enjoyed it! I work with a variety of age groups. I love those kids and I feel like I have made a difference because these kids are learning, and getting along better with each other. It’s so awesome. I encourage everyone to do it!”

“My service learning experience has been
the best class I’ve taken at Badin.
I’ve had a great time working with my 4th grade class.
My favorite part about Service Learning
is being able to see the difference that I’ve made.”
Michael DiMuzio ‘07
“My experience has been fun! I love helping out the little kindergartners. They look up to me a lot! I feel like I’m really making a difference, their reading is improving. I’m so glad I decided to take this class.”

In accordance with the Gospel of Matthew 25: 34 - 37 and 21: 28, the Service Learning Course is being established at Badin High School . A goal of this new course is increased responsibility to one's fellow human. All Christians are called to work with and help one another and this program attempts to accommodate this calling.
Matthew 25: 34-37
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.'
Matthew 21:28
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.
