Principal's Letter
July, 2009
|
Dear Prospective Students and Parents,
Welcome to Badin High School! As you run through this dynamic interactive website, you will learn a lot about our fine school. You will see that Badin offers you an intimate atmosphere in which to learn.
The culture of Badin High School is outstanding. Our students know each other and the teachers well. They feel important and well thought of by their student peers and their teachers. They like the small school approach to education that we espouse. We have smaller classes and a lower teacher to student ratio at Badin than the larger schools, and that is a plus for you. We have some 450 students here, not the twelve, thirteen, or fourteen hundred that our competitors have.
You should notice how pleasant the atmosphere of Badin is. Students are happy here and they genuinely like each other. There is a feeling of family that pervades the entire school.
Notice the emphasis that we put on faith development, academics, discipline, activities and athletics. Somewhere here, "There is a place for you at Badin." That place could be in an Advanced Placement Class, an honors class, a college prep class or on the basketball court – or all of the above. Perhaps you are interested in music or drama. There is a place for you at Badin High School.
Enjoy your journey through our web site, and feel free to contact me at any time with your questions about Badin High School.
Sincerely,
Frank M. Margello
Principal

Admissions
Badin High School is a comprehensive secondary co-ed Catholic high school. If you are interested in attending Badin High School, we are interested in having you here! Though Badin is 90 percent Catholic, we certainly welcome all faiths.
We encourage 8th grade students to "shadow" a Badin student to learn more about the Badin environment. What a great way to see what life at Badin is really like! Your son/daughter will receive personal attention as he attends class and eats lunch with a Badin student ambassador. A lunch voucher good for $3.50 will be given to a visiting student. To schedule a shadow day, please call the Development Office. At least two days notice is requested. Students are asked to dress conservatively by wearing something along the lines of a pullover and khakis (please, no t-shirts or jeans); gym shoes are permitted. We also conduct individual campus tours for parents and their students at your request. Call Badin High School at 863-3993 and ask for the Development Office to make an appointment.
Our annual Open House takes place on a Sunday in early November – in 2009, that date is Nov. 1 -- from 1 to 4 p.m. Meet the administration and faculty, learn about our academic offerings, tour our school, see faculty presentations, and talk to students about all extracurricular and athletic opportunities.
What is the admission process? Eighth-grade students take a 4-hour Placement Exam on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This helps us decide what is the appropriate level for the student in various subjects, including English, Science and Math. Note that this is a Placement Exam and NOT an "entrance test." Badin offers various academic opportunities to meet the needs of our students and welcomes all academic levels. These levels include general, college prep, advanced college prep, honors as well as advanced placement courses. Tutoring is available to those students who qualify. The High School Placement Test, junior high school grades and Terra Nova, or equivalent, scores are all used to determine the appropriate levels for your student.
To register for the High School Placement Exam contact Badin at 863-3993. There is a standard charge of $25 per student and a make-up date is available.. Students must take the Placement Test on one of these two dates to be considered for scholarship opportunities. Students may choose to send their test scores to a maximum of three Catholic high schools in the area. Test scores and scholarship letters are sent in early January (January 9, 2009, in the current cycle.)
An Information Night takes place late January, followed by Registration Night a week later. Students may register after that time as well. There is a $300 registration fee payable at the time of registration. This fee is non-refundable, but it is applied to the full tuition. It is not a separate fee.

Shadow Day
Interested eighth grade students are encouraged to schedule a Shadow Day at Badin High School.
Students who attend our six immediate partner schools - Queen of Peace, Sacred Heart, St. Ann, St. Joseph, St. Peter in Chains and Mother Teresa - generally come to Badin for a combined 8th Grade Day in the fall of their 8th grade year. This is part of a school day and is treated as such in terms of dress and decorum.
Other prospective students or their parents should contact the Development Office at 863-3993 to arrange a Shadow Day.
We do our best to accommodate the date that is most convenient to you - but there are some days that just won't work out according to our calendar. We will work that out in our scheduling conversation.
Individual students who shadow will need a permission slip/medical form to shadow at Badin. This slip is sent out when the Shadow Day is set up. The Badin student that they are shadowing with will alert his or her teachers that the Shadow Day is upcoming and get their approval on a form that we give them in advance of the day.
Visiting students come to Badin by 7:30 a.m., check in at the Main Office, get paired up with their Badin student and attend classes. We recommend that the student plan to be picked up around 2 p.m. This offers nearly a full day at Badin, but enables the visitor to depart Badin in advance of our 2:30 dismissal and all the traffic that entails.
Dress appropriately. No blue jeans, t-shirts, tank tops or crop tops, please. We suggest a nice pair of pants with a polo or dress shirt. Girls have the option of wearing a dress.
Lunch is paid for by Badin High School up to $3.50 Anything over that amount must be paid for by the visitor.
This is an outstanding opportunity for students to get a feel for Badin High School. Remember, though, that this is a school day at Badin and the visitor is expected to act accordingly. We think Shadow Days are an excellent experience for our visitors. The Badin students always seem to enjoy the company as well.

Daily Schedules
Stephen T. Badin High School is on an 8-period day, beginning at 7:35 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m. Classes are 44 minutes in length, with one double-bell each week for a science lab.
The regular schedule is as follows:
Homeroom: 7:35 a.m. – 7:40 a.m.
1st period: 7:40 a.m. – 8:24 a.m.
2nd period: 8:27 a.m. – 9:11 a.m.
3rd period: 9:14 a.m. – 9:58 a.m.
4th period: 10:01 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.
5th period: 10:48 a.m. – 11:32 a.m.
6th period: 11:36 a.m. 12:55 p.m.
(1st lunch: 11:36 a.m. - 12:08 p.m.)
(2nd lunch: 12:23 p.m. – 12:55 p.m.)
7th period: 12:59 p.m. – 1:43 p.m.
8th period: 1:46 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
At what point a student’s lunch occurs during the 6th period is dependent upon what class he or she is taking.
There are other variants on the main schedule, including Extended Homeroom, Mass Day (Badin generally has one all-school Mass per month, with Mass taking place at 10 a.m. in Mulcahey Gym), Afternoon Assembly and Early Dismissal, to name four. All schedules are available to students in their student handbook.
Badin’s luncheon meals are widely acknowledged to be outstanding. Cafeteria manager Shirley Ensor and her staff do an excellent job feeding the Badin students, with two entrée selections per day and a well-stocked salad bar, and many other food, beverage and dessert options. The a la carte luncheons are very reasonably priced at about $3.50 per day.

National Merit Scholars

Tuition
Badin offers an outstanding scholarship and financial aid program. For the top scorers on the Badin Placement and Scholarship Exam, full and partial scholarships are available. The No. 1 scorer on the test at Badin receives a full scholarship, renewable for all four years. Others among the top scorers receive varying renewable offers. All scholarships are non-transferable. Numerous scholarships are also available through area parochial grade schools, and from the Notre Dame Alumnae Association.
Tuition at Badin High School for the 2009-2010 school year is $7,100 for parish-affiliated students and $7,300 for non-parish-affiliated students.
Payment will be in 10 monthly increments through Badin's FACTS tuition management system or in one lump sum at the beginning of the school year. In the spring, when students register for classes for the following year, a $300 registration fee is involved. This fee, however, is applied to tuition. It is not a separate fee - but it is not refunded if a student decides not to return to school or registers as a freshman and then does not enter.
Members of the entering freshman class generally attend an Information Night in early February and a Registration Night the following week. At this time, classes are discussed and the registration fee is paid.
Badin offers $300,000 annually in Financial Aid. This includes scholarship money as well as the opportunity for students to participate in the after-school work program. This work program lasts one quarter of the year and is valued at $1,000 per student. There is also a summer work program with a similar $1,000 valuation per student.
Financial aid forms are available on this website beginning in January. They are expected to be filed by March 1st and decisions are rendered in April. Approximately one-third of Badin students are on some sort of aid.
For more information, contact the Business Manager at Badin High School.
